I think the advent of digital cameras was huge step forward for photographers – amateur and professional. There’s now a wonderful variety of digital cameras available with all sorts of features. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to select the right camera, at the right price with the features you needed.

When choosing your camera think about features in relation to the type of photography you do. Will you be taking pictures indoors or outdoors, do you take a lot of casual family scenes or fast action sport pictures? Digital cameras at pretty much every level will offer optical and digital zoom features.

I suggest you ignore the digital zoom. At first glance it may seem impressive but digital zoom results in really poor quality pictures. Obviously you want a camera with low shutter lag.

It’s just totally amazing how much the cost of digital cameras has come down. There is a price and features war going on these days among camera manufacturers, and you can get an excellent digital camera for very little money.

In terms of resolution, for example, even very inexpensive cameras now offer 10 and 12 megapixel! Unfortunately, very few digital cameras still have viewfinders today, and so a big, bright LCD screen is more important than ever. Almost all digital cameras have both optical and digital zooms.

Most standard cameras have a 3X zoom, but some inexpensive models offer 4x and 5x zooms, and so-called “long zoom” cameras can go much higher, but they cost more. Also, don’t be fooled by digital zoom. Optical zoom is what matters. I like cameras that use SD Cards. If you want to use high capacity cards (over 2GB), make sure the camera supports the SDHC format.

If any of those features matter to you, they are all available even in inexpensive cameras. Check the numerous digital camera reviews online to get an idea of what a model that caught your interest offers.
